Purge Before Moving: Four Stages Of A Well Thought-Out Move

Nothing starts out as junk. No one goes to a junk store at the mall looking for something they can lug up to their attic and leave there for years, collecting dust and providing new condo homes for spiders. Junk accumulates in our homes precisely because when we first acquired it, it wasn't junk. Our old apartment furniture, the mementos from childhood trips, the old records and tax returns - all of it had value at some point. When it ceases to have specific value to our everyday life we often choose to store it in the basement or closets because we still see the old value. When the time comes to move, however, it makes no sense to pay someone to move what has slowly evolved into junk. To save money and time, the moment you decide to move house it's time to start organizing your purge.

Sort it Out

Step one is to simply organize everything. There should be three basic categories: Move, Sell/Donate, and Junk.

Move

The Move category is self-explanatory: This is the stuff that, for whatever reason, you are taking with you. The furniture, the kitchen supplies, the bric-a-brac and electronics - if you're planning to use it in the new house, it's to be packed and put in the moving truck when it arrives.

Sell or Donate

The Sell or Donate category is for the things that have become junk to you but which still might have some value to someone else. The things in this category might include furniture that's in good shape but which has no place in your new home, or old televisions that still work. A Moving Sale can be a great way to not only re-purpose some of these items, but defray the cost of your move as well! But of course not everything will sell, and the leftovers can be donated to charities, homeless shelters, or even your neighbours if they're interested!

Junk

If there are items in the Sell or Donate category that you find you can't even give away, they should be included in the Junk category. Just get rid of it. You have to run a return-on-investment analysis that balances your emotional attachment to something versus the costs of transporting it and then storing it in the new home. Having a junk removal company for disposing of these unwanted items is a cost-effective way of saving yourself the trouble of dealing with it.
